When a mosquito carrying the disease bites a person, they become infected with the dengue virus. Most mosquitoes that carry Ae. albopictus are the main carriers of the disease. The virus that causes dengue is called the dengue virus. A yearly national risk of dengue fever exists in Pakistan. In Pakistan, there were 22,938 cases of dengue fever recorded in 2017, more than 3,200 cases in 2018, 24,547 cases in 2019, and 3,442 cases in 2020, according to the National Institute of Health (NIH) Islamabad. Between 1 January and 25 November 2021, a total of 48,906 cases—including 183 fatalities (Case Fatality Ratio (CFR): 0.4%)—were reported nationwide. The number of cases increased significantly in 2021, especially in Lahore and the twin towns of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
