The Deaconess tradition of Europe in the 1800s is where we got our start. Florence Nightingale, who is known as the founder of modern nursing, went to school at a Deaconess facility in Germany. She then used what she learned in her nursing work. In 1889, an evangelical pastor in St. Louis, Missouri, suggested using the Deaconess model to set up health care services to meet the needs of the community. The Deaconess School of Nursing and then the Deaconess College of Nursing grew out of these services.
